What to expect from counselling
Counselling is a talking therapy and many people think it is about giving advice, but it isn't. The sessions give you the opportunity to explore any difficulties you are facing in your life which may have resulted from past experiences or something from the present. I offer a safe, confidential working environment where clients feel held and at ease to talk about what is troubling them.
To talk about something that makes you feel anxious is not easy to start with and making the initial appointment can also cause anxiety. Very often people are put off by reliving painful memories but talking about them can help to heal the wounds and a sense of relief has a healing affect on the situation. Once the sessions start and trust is built up between us the anxiety recedes and talking about your emotions and feelings becomes easier.
By exploring these difficulties there is an opportunity to break the cycles of experience and to explore ways to move forward making sense of what is happening in your life right now. This has a cathartic outcome on the situation you find yourself in and be empowering.
I am a trained integrative therapeutic counsellor which means I can work creatively with you to help you through whatever you are bringing to the sessions. To explain about working creatively: it could be that you find writing or drawing are ways that help you to express your feelings and emotions and in so doing find a way to make sense of what is happening for you right now.
Sessions last up to an hour and are generally on a weekly basis and we can discuss how many sessions you might require when we meet for your first session. I offer an initial free 30 minute consultation to find out whether I am the right counsellor for you.
As I am a registered member of the BACP I am required to work within an ethical framework to ensure continued levels of professional standards.
